Visible from sunset to sunrise, Experimenta’s
latest Unheard Voices: Invisible by Night is a beautiful
and haunting new artwork that brings to life ghosts of Melbourne’s
past, and exposes the secret history of one of our city’s most
public buildings – the Melbourne Visitors Centre at Federation
Square.
Presented by Experimenta in association with the 2004
Melbourne International Arts Festival, Invisible by Night is
an interactive projection work by Melbourne artist Lynette Wallworth
that evokes the personal stories of the people interred at Melbourne’s
Princes Bridge Morgue (where the Melbourne Visitors Centre now stands)
between 1871 and 1888.
Each night after dark, passers-by are invited to touch
the Flinders Street window of the Melbourne Visitors Centre. With their
touch, users can engage with the haunting image of a grieving woman who
is trying to communicate through the mist-covered glass.
Simple and poignant, Invisible by Night suggests
the ghosts from the past that may go unnoticed as we walk throughout
our city. Artist Lynette Wallworth says "Invisible by Night is a
reflection on the life of cities, and the many cries for help that we
are confronted with daily and choose to ignore. I am interested in the
effect of work which attempts to make contact in a very public place,
via simple messages of grieving to a world that might not want to take
notice".
Lynette holds a New Media Arts Fellowship from the
Australia Council for the Arts and is currently working on installation
projects in Iran, Massachusetts and New Mexico. Working with DVD installation,
photography, short film and performance, her work focuses primarily on
the interplay between the moving image, sound, space and audience.
