The program will feature an exhibition of women's art drawn from the extensive holdings of the NGV, entitled Creators and Inventors: Australian Women's Art in the National Gallery. Over 100 out standing works by 90 female artists rep resented in the gallery's collection will be shown in the centrally located Special Exhibitions Gallery and Photography Gallery on the ground floor. The artists represented include Margaret Preston, Micky Allan, Janet Dawson, Bea Maddock, Inge King, Kitty Kantilla, Susan Cohn along with many other acclaimed Australian women artists.

Curator Jennifer Phipps has said, "this is one of the most telling exhibitions to be presented by the National Gallery of Victoria. Whilst recognising some of Australia's best artists this exhibition will also present some works from the NGV collection which have never been on public display. The exhibition celebrates the innovative and creative verve that women artists have applied to their work over the last 130 years."

In addition to this major exhibition, the Vic Health Access Gallery will present an exhibition of community women artists which will explore the relation ship between individual and community art practice.

An associated public program will feature women's achievements and concerns in literature, music, performance and the visual arts, through a series of lectures, forums, seminars, performances and concerts. Celebrating Women will be launched at a dinner for 500 guests in the Great Hall of the NGV on Friday 18 February 1994.
