Vivienne Tate

Vivienne Tate is a sound, performance, visual artist, and musician, based in Naarm/Melbourne. Her sound centred, site-specific projects, explore shifting primary sensory focus from the seen, to the heard. Through utilising audio-visual technologies, field-recordings, installation and musical performance, her work facilitates deep-listening processes to understand space and place through sound. Environmental elements have unique sound marks that science can explain but require sensory intelligence to interpret.

Vivienne has a Master of Art, Art in Public Space, RMIT and a Bachelor of Education, University of Melbourne (Melbourne CAE). She’s presented projects sited in metropolitan and regional Victorian. Installations include Hobson’s Bay Dear Agnes project, Altona, Public Art Park ’24 with Testing Ground, Melbourne, and The Stick Shed, Murtoa. She’s undertaken printmaking residencies at the Opificio della Rosa Studio in Rimini, Italy. Vivienne plays regularly in independent and street bands.

Recipient of the Experimenta MAPS Award 2023

In 2023, Vivienne Tate was the recipient of our 2023 Experimenta Award for RMIT Master of Art, Art in Public Space (MAPS) graduates. Vivienne joined Experimenta in 2024 to conduct an internship. Her Master’s research project, Towards a Tonal Centre, saw Vivienne work alongside Experimenta’s creative team on presentation of Peter Thiedeke’s TWIFSY (The world is fine, save yourself).
